Panthong's score tied the MAC mark for lowest round in the history of the championships and was the lowest opening round ever recorded. Kent State golfers own the first three places in the individual standings and are the only players under par after the first round. Second place Toledo trails Kent State by 21 strokes with a 303, while Eastern Michigan is third after combining for a 305. NIU and Akron are tied for third at 310, eight strokes ahead of sixth-place Western Michigan. 'There are still two days left, we can easily move up the leaderboard,' Kester said.

'Our history in this tournament has been a slow first round, so hopefully that's the case and we can rebound with better rounds the next two days. The course played tough today. There was a little bit of wind, tough pin positions, and some holes were playing long. It was not easy by any means. What Kent State did was pretty impressive.'
